Torn between playing games and getting on with my writing. Done a lot of writing and research in the past few days. I now know more about how to blow up the Internets and how space stations work than I ever thought I'd know. But then I never thought my brain would come up as anything mad as all of this...hum hum.
What game shall I play tonight Internets? Comment here or on msn, wherever you're at ;)
--- 4 votes so far for the original Thief games 2 for Stronghold and one for..."that crazy Russian game with the rhinos in tents" I think you mean "Hard to be a God" and it's not a Russian game. It's a game in English, based on a Russian Sci Fi novel of the same name, translated in to English by the French, set in a Spannish Italien -pre-Renaissance world thank you very much.
Votes still on going :)

Seamstress Guild Party in Honor of Terry Pratchett
|

discworld

I just sent this out - post it where ever you wish - Mrs. Palm
Not A Needle Among 'Em
The Seamstress Guild is a loose affiliation of women and men who come together for a variety of reasons. Our official purpose (whenever the Watch is making inquiries) is to prepare for the Seamstress Guild Party in honor of Mr. Terry Pratchett which is to be the highlight of the North American Discworld Convention's first night.
On the glorious night in question, the Grand Ballroom will be transformed into the Seamstress Guild Hall. Ladies of the Guild and gentleman from the Men's Auxiliary will be hosting a grand reception that involves food, music, and a Discworld scavenger hunt, as well as the chance to meet the very flower of Discworld Society, such as it is, and be photographed for The Truth's Society Page. Prizes for best costumes worn that evening will be awarded by our Esteemed Patron, Mr Terry Pratchett.
Mr Pratchett has also arranged for a special gift for our attendees, which will remain a secret until the night in question....
NIL VOLVPTI, SINE LVCRE - Seamstress Guild motto This is to be the second party of it's kind organized by the Seamstress Guild, the first taking place at the San Jose WorldCon in 2002, where Mr. Pratchett, was the Guest of Honor. The entertainment went well into the wee hours. Our Patron had such a good time with our Guild members and guests that he has asked us to do it again (it being the party, of course - Mr Pratchett has thus far refused all other offers) and so began our preparations. We are now ready to host this next event and would be most pleased if you could join us, and him, on the night in question.
Please see the first link listed below this announcement for information on the convention.
The second link will take you to the Seamstress Guild discussion board, where the men and women of the guild are gathered to plan both the party and their costumes.
Respectfully Yours,
Mrs Palm Party Maven, NADWCon

Please note: Tickets for the convention are limited to 900. At present, we have sold over 750. Those who wait too long to buy their tickets for this event will be disappointed.
Event Location: Mission Palms Hotel - Grand Ballroom in Tempe Event TIME Details: 7 PM - 9:30 PM

Crikey, it's been so long that I almost forgot how to post... had it not have been for the 'post' button. Clever stuff that.
1) What author do you own the most books by? I think currently it's David Mitchell Or Dr Seuss- I have a collector's box doncha know... I'd say Agatha Christie, because there is a complete collection under the bed at my parents house, but I believe that I may have 'borrowed' that quite some time ago...
2) What book do you own the most copies of? 'Cloud Atlas' by David Mitchell. I have a copy in Portsmouth and a copy on loan to a friend somewhere.
3) Did it bother you that both those questions ended with prepositions? No, not at all. Does that make me a bad person?
4) What fictional character are you secretly in love with? Umm, I don't believe I have one.
5) What book have you read the most times in your life (excluding picture books read to children; i.e., Goodnight Moon does not count)? 'The Hiding Place' By Trezza Azzopardi. It's my faaavourite.
6) What was your favourite book when you were ten years old? 'Mr Magnolia'. He only had one boot. Actually the best children's book ever.
7) What is the worst book you've read in the past year? I don't think there was a 'worst'.
8) What is the best book you've read in the past year? I really enjoyed 'The Boy in the Striped Pijamas', and of course, 'Ricehead's Revenge'. 'Let the Right One' In is shaping up to be pretty blooming great too.
9) If you could force everyone you tagged to read one book, what would it be? 'The Hiding Place' (see 5). Because I love it. Or 'The Cat in the Hat'. Because I love it.
10) Who deserves to win the next Nobel Prize for Literature? John Ajvide Lindqvist, because he has fixed my 'reader's block' and I really thought that would take a miracle.
11) What book would you most like to see made into a movie? 'The Umbrella Academy: Apocalypse Suite', a graphic novel by Gerard Way- that'd be a flippin' awesome film
12) What book would you least like to see made into a movie? Umm, I'm pretty sure 'War and Peace' would be too long for one sitting, and I get restless...
13) Describe your weirdest dream involving a writer, book, or literary character. I'm not too sure really, there isn't one off hand. Unless Disney counts? I end up in a really messed up Disneyland in quite a few dreams?
14) What is the most lowbrow book you've read as an adult? I'm not too sure, 'Dr Seuss's ABC' maybe..
15) What is the most difficult book you've ever read? Crikey, I don't know. I know that I struggle with Victorian realist stuff, but that's because I don't like it so much, not because it's difficult..
16) What is the most obscure Shakespeare play you've seen? I saw a weird interpretation of 'Midsummer Night's Dream' once, with a very obscure couple of sex scenes.
17) Do you prefer the French or the Russians? I have no preference!
18) Roth or Updike? If I said I didn't even know who they were, would you be offended?
19) David Sedaris or Dave Eggers? Neither
20) Shakespeare, Milton, or Chaucer? Shakespeare
21) Austen or Eliot? Eliot
22) What is the biggest or most embarrassing gap in your reading? Anything occurring between early modern English and 1960 :S
23) What is your favourite novel? 'The Hiding Place'
24) Play? Oh crikey... let's go for 'The Tempest', because it's lovely.
25) Poem? This one:
Separation.
Your absence has gone through me Like thread through a needle. Everything I do is stitched with its color.
-- W.S. Merwin
26) Essay? Bits and bobs from 'On Photography' by Susan Sonntag (i think)- she's good!
27) Short story? 'The Secret Sharer' by Jospeh Conrad.
28) Work of nonfiction? Bran Nicol's book of course! A brilliant little collection of essays on the Postmodern.
29) Who is your favourite writer? David Mitchell.
30) Who is the most overrated writer alive today? J.K Rowling.
31) What is your desert island book? 'Cloud Atlas'- it's vivid enough to act as both a film and a book.
32) And... what are you reading right now? 'Let the Right One in'. It's Brilliant.

Does anyone have any The Lovely Bones tattoos? Or quotes from Sarah Dessen books? I'd love some ideas. I already have a list of ones that I want to think about for awhile.
- book quotes .. nothing is ever certain - the lovely bones .. He wore his innocence like a comfortable old coat - the lovely bones .. one word can change the whole world - this lullaby .. don't think or judge, just listen - just listen .. There is never a time or place for true love. It happens accidentally, in a heartbeat, in a single flashing, throbbing moment. - the truth about forever .. Life is an awful, ugly place to not have a best friend. - someone like you .. There has to be a middle. Without it, nothing can ever truly be whole. Because it is not just the space between, but also what holds everything together - just listen
I just have no idea which one means the most to me, or where I'd place them! I also have a lot of lyric tattoo ideas, but I figured I'd spare you. If you want to see, just ask!

The Way We Eat Now (1)
|

desperance

Okay, 'fess up: who knew that you could fry a slice of turkey-and-pork terrine?
What's that you say, you all knew...?
Well, I suppose I shouldn't be surprised.
It's my six o'clock nibbles phase. For those still curious from yesterday, salted grapes are - as described, really: grapes dried to raisins and then lightly salted, either by washing in brine (my supposition) or otherwise. I like.
But I was out of saucisson sec, and seeking an alternative; and there is still terrine, but I wanted something warm, and wondered what that might be like fried, and - well, no sooner wondered than achieved, really. On the back of a day where I have made mayonnaise and bottled confit of pigs' cheeks (and am looking forward hugely to a repeat of yesterday's risotto of chicken and sugar-snaps with peashoots, which was gorgeous), frying a slice of terrine is a mere snip.
Warmth brings out the flavours more, of course, which might have been a problem if I had spiced it highly in anticipation of eating it cold, but as it happens, not really. 'Tis yummy. Yay.
Just, I am plagued with furry things. Furry demanding things. It would be an act of weakness to fry them a slice too, wouldn't it? And, of course, ultimately self-defeating. They have no notion of equal shares being fair shares, or anything like that...
(In other news: I am supposed to spend parts of every day lying on the floor on a spine-stretching device. This is ... difficult with a small furry trying to eat your feet.)

Life in the Country: The New Meat Saw
|

e_moon60
|
Today our schedule and John's finally meshed and we went over to the ranch to try out the new meat saw. We didn't have long so we cut only one chunk of lamb...but wow. As in...wow.
I cleaned the table and then we pulled a shoulder of lamb (near-mutton lamb--not a little bitty lamb) out of the freezer and turned on the machine. And it might as well have been butter, for all the trouble the saw had with it. Fingertip pressure was all it took--we weren't trying to hurry, since we didn't know how the thing would work (after the problems we had with the little one, before.) The cut surface was *so* pretty.
Now, admittedly, there's a lot of cleaning up if you do only one cut. But when it comes to "fabricating" a beef carcass, we can do a lot of cutting with only one cleanup.
We're all very happy about this, and envisioning the freezers being full again.
