Am I being stupid, or does this verse imply that if the soldiers were "Dandy Beaus" they wouldn't be able to fight in the war because they'd be afraid of messing up their appearance?

A Dandy Beau is all the go,
So I resolved to change my plan,
When, on my waist, the stays were brac'd,
And I no longer was a Man!

When Ladies see a Thing like me,
They laugh and call me "Pretty Moll";
And, if they meet me in the street,
They always send me to the wall!

Because I am the Dandy, O!
A dainty pretty Dandy, o!
I dress so neat, and look so sweet
As any sugar candy, O!

My collar stiff, and handkerchief

Hahah amusing.
I think that verse, if I'm not mistaken, means that even if they were shot or been hit by a bomb, they'd never fall down... since that would sully their clothes. They would continue to fight I suppose. Hehe. :P

That's my take on it.

I wasn't sure what that bit was about, actually. It might have something to do with curling their hair like a woman would do. I can't remember where, but in my notes I have a reference to Byron spending three hours a night curling his hair... do you think it has something to do with that?

I would have thought either that, or out of fear for ruining their finery, they would be a far superior force overrunning the enemy in short order.

Besides, think of the psychological impact a line of over dressed troops, sprinting a bayonet charge and screaming like banshees would have against enemy soldiers.

I love how our dissertations refer to amusing and interesting things like this! Go us for having great ideas for dissertations

Sorry I missed you tonight; my friend from work ended up cooking me tea and we had to stop off at various supermarkets on the way home to have a root for things she could eat for lunch tomorrow, so the walk home was slower than usual!
